Talgad Fort
Maharashtra, India
Talgad Fort is a narrow hill fort located about 18 kilometers south of Roha town in Maharashtra, perched at an altitude of around 1,000 feet.
Shaped like a narrow strip approximately 20 meters wide, it sits on a narrow spur fortified to keep watch over the enemy and guard the trade route from Maval to nearby sea ports. The fort was originally controlled by the Adilshah of Bijapur in the early 16th century and was captured by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1648. It played a key role in controlling activities of the Siddhis of Janjira.
The fort is historically notable for the event in 1659 when it was encircled by Siddhi troops during Afzal Khan’s attempt to kill Shivaji Maharaj at nearby Pratapgad; however, Shivaji’s successful defense marked a turning point in Maratha history.
Talgad Fort features robust fortifications with bastions and defensive walls designed for surveillance and security, reflecting the military architecture and strategic importance typical of Maratha forts.
