Tatsuno Castle (Tatsuno‑jō) is a historic castle site in Tatsuno city, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, notable for having two distinct castle complexes: an older medieval mountaintop castle on Keiro‑san and a later Edo‑period flatland “palace castle” at the foot of the same mountain.

The mountaintop castle was first built in 1499 by Akamatsu Murahide as the main base of the Tatsuno Akamatsu clan, later captured and reformed after Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s campaigns, and now survives mainly as original stone walls, pavements, and earthworks with a scenic view from the hilltop.

In 1672, Wakisaka Yasumasa established a new castle at the current site, 15 km southwest of Himeji Castle, as a sub‑castle of Himeji for a domain of over 50,000 koku; this lower castle was designed as a ceremonial palace residence rather than a heavily fortified keep, and since it was rebuilt on historical documents rather than blueprints, it originally had no main donjon but featured gates, corner towers, and a large Honmaru (inner palace).
