Tekkalakote Fort
Karnataka, India
Tekkalakote Fort is an 18th-century square-shaped stronghold located within the town of Tekkalakote (also spelled Tekkalakota), a Panchayat town in Siruguppa taluk of Ballari district, Karnataka, India, about 45 km north of Bellary.
Featuring circular bastions at each corner, a north-facing main entrance called Mahadwara with symmetrical floral motifs typical of Vijayanagara architecture, and advanced construction using binding materials, it was likely built during the Vijayanagara Empire era or under local ruler Hande Hanumappa Nayak in the 16th century.
The fort stands near a prehistoric Neolithic hill site with ancient rock paintings and artifacts dating back to around 1770 BCE, close to Ashokan edict villages like Nittur and Udegolam, blending medieval defense with deep archaeological significance.
