Tera Fort
Tera, Kutch, Gujarat, India
Tera Fort in Kutch, Gujarat, was built in the early 18th century by a Jadeja chief during Deshalji I's reign.
Located about 85 kilometers west of Bhuj, it overlooks three lakes named Chattasar, Sumerasar, and Chatasar. The fort suffered heavy damage during a war in Maharao Lakhpatji's reign when Sumraji Thakore, the Tera chief, rebelled against the Rao of Kutch and artillery was used for the first time in Kutch’s history under Ram Singh Malam’s guidance.
After a three-month siege, Sumraji surrendered and apologized, but the fort remained partially ruined. It was also damaged in the 1819 earthquake and later repaired. Tera was historically a large jagir consisting of around 40 villages, and the fort stands today as a tourist attraction reflecting the region's heritage.
The village nearby is known for its historic havelis, Jain temples, and traditional water management through interlinked lakes, showcasing the area's rich cultural and architectural significance.
