Thalassery Fort
Thalassery, Kerala, India
Thalassery Fort, also known as Tellicherry Fort, was built in 1708 by the British East India Company in Thalassery, Kerala, originally serving as a warehouse for pepper and cardamom trade.
Over time, it became a key military and administrative center for the British in the Malabar region, playing an important role during conflicts such as the Mysore Wars against Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan.
The fort is square-shaped with massive laterite walls, bastions at each corner, and an impressive entrance atop a towering wall. It has secret tunnels leading to the sea, intricately carved doors, a lighthouse, and underground chambers once used for storage.
Constructed using a durable mixture of quicklime, egg white, and jaggery, the fort reflects both military strategy and colonial architectural influences.
