Verified The Arboretum

Nottingham, United Kingdom

The Arboretum in Nottingham, established and opened to the public in 1852, is Nottingham's oldest public park and was designed by the prominent botanist Samuel Curtis.

Covering 17 acres, it was created under the Nottingham Inclosure Act 1845 to provide green space for relaxation, education, and recreation amidst the growing industrial city. The park features over 800 trees representing around 65 species, some dating back to the 19th century, planted in a naturalistic style called 'The Natural Order' to serve as a living botanical collection.

A notable highlight is the unique pagoda housing a bell taken from a Cantonese temple, surrounded by 19th-century Russian cannons, reflecting the park’s historical and cultural connections.

The Arboretum also includes Victorian aviaries, ornamental lakes, a bandstand, historic gates, and Tudor-style lodge buildings, many of which are listed structures. It has maintained much of its original Victorian grandeur and botanical interest, serving as an enduring symbol of Nottingham's heritage and commitment to public green spaces.
