The Hill Garden and Pergola in Hampstead, London, was created in the early 20th century by William Lever, also known as Lord Leverhulme, an industrialist and art patron, who bought the estate called "The Hill" in 1904.

He commissioned the renowned landscape architect Thomas Mawson to design an elaborate garden and a long pergola to serve as a grand setting for summer garden parties and leisurely strolls. The pergola, built over several years from 1905 to 1925, is a raised walkway adorned with brick arches and climbing plants, offering views over the landscaped terraces and Hampstead Heath beyond.

The extensive earthworks needed to raise the garden were made possible by using spoil from the nearby Northern Line underground extension, turning a practical necessity into a design advantage. After Lord Leverhulme’s death, the estate fell into decline but was restored from the 1960s onward and is now a beloved public garden known for its romantic, overgrown beauty, architectural elements, and serene atmosphere.
