The Kochi Prefectural Makino Botanical Garden
Kochi, Japan, Japan
The Kochi Prefectural Makino Botanical Garden (also called Makino Botanical Garden) is one of Japan's most comprehensive botanical gardens, located at Godaisan 4200-6 in Kochi City, Kochi Prefecture on Shikoku Island, established in April 1958 to honor Dr. Tomitaro Makino (1862-1957), a Kochi native widely regarded as the "Father of Japanese Plant Taxonomy" who conducted extensive botanical surveys across Japan and named more than 4,000 plant species. The garden spans approximately 8 hectares (20 acres) of undulating terrain near the summit of Mount Godai and showcases over 3,000 species of wild and cultivated plants associated with Dr. Makino throughout the seasons, including a jungle-like greenhouse, the 50th anniversary garden with oriental garden plants, and a permanent exhibition room featuring Makino's handwritten botanical drawings. As a comprehensive facility, it conducts plant research, disseminates plant knowledge, and provides relaxation through exhibits, with an interactive exhibit enjoyable by both children and adults showcasing Makino's achievements in easy-to-understand ways.
