The Lovell Quinta Arboretum
Swettenham, United Kingdom
The Lovell Quinta Arboretum in Swettenham, United Kingdom, is a 28-acre garden created by Sir Bernard Lovell, founder of the Jodrell Bank Radio Telescope, who purchased the property in 1948.
Starting with open grassland, Lovell developed the arboretum over many decades into a diverse collection of around 2,500 trees and shrubs representing more than 800 species. The garden includes three National Plant Collections, featuring significant collections of oaks (Quercus), pines (Pinus), and tree ferns, with some ancient oak trees on site.
Lovell designed many features to commemorate important events in his and his family's life, such as the elegant Reith Avenue. The arboretum combines scientific interest with personal heritage, offering visitors a richly planted landscape of rare and mature specimens alongside paths and contemplative spaces.
