The old town of Đurđevac
Đurđevac, Croatia, Croatia
The old town of Đurđevac, known as Stari grad Đurđevac, is a striking Gothic-Renaissance fortress at the heart of Đurđevac in Croatia's Koprivnica-Križevci County.
Built around 1488 by Bishop Sigismund Ernušt of Pécs on a hill amid former swampland for defense against Ottoman invasions and noble conflicts, its octagonal design features thick stone-brick walls and a 9-meter tower offering panoramic views.
Never captured despite sieges—including a legendary rooster-assisted Ottoman repulsion—it evolved from feudal center to military outpost until 1871, now housing the Đurđevac City Museum with Ivan Lacković's 160+ artworks and hosting exhibitions. Renovated in the 1980s-90s, it blends history with modern cafés on its ground floor.
