Verified Thirumayam Fort

Thirumayam, Tamil Nadu, India

Thirumayam Fort, located in Tamil Nadu’s Pudukkottai district, was constructed in 1687 by Vijaya Raghunatha Sethupathi, the Raja of Ramnad. It spans around 40 acres atop a rocky hill and was built for strategic military defense. The fort originally had seven concentric walls, of which four survive today, and it combines Hindu and Islamic architectural styles.

It features three entrances, temples dedicated to Hanuman, Sakthi, Ganapathi, Bhairava, and rock-cut shrines for Vaishnavite and Saivite deities. The fort houses bastions with British-era cannons, water tanks, granaries, and an underground chamber that was used as a magazine. Its location offers panoramic views and natural defenses, highlighting its importance in historical battles and local governance.

The fort is also notable for its religious significance, with several ancient temples within its premises, making it a blend of military strength and spiritual heritage. The Archaeological Survey of India has renovated the fort, preserving this symbol of Tamil Nadu’s rich cultural and architectural past.
