Verified Thivim Fort

Tivim, Goa, India

Thivim Fort, also known as Fortaleza de São Sebastião or Tivim Fort, is a historic fort in Goa built in 1635 by the Portuguese to protect the Bardez region in North Goa.

The fort stretches along the western bank of the Tivim canal and originally formed part of a larger complex of three forts that guarded the area, including Forte de Assumção and Forte de Meio built later in 1681. Its fortifications included a high wall along the canal, deep moats, and multiple guardhouses, making it a strong defensive barrier against Bahamani and Maratha threats.

The fort showcases a blend of Portuguese and Indian architectural styles, with thick laterite stone walls, bastions, and remnants of cannons and watchtowers. Although much of the fort is now in ruins, its structural significance and strategic historical role are still evident, with the fort having witnessed key battles involving Maratha forces in the 17th and 18th centuries.

The surrounding area is noted for its peaceful ambiance and lush greenery, making Thivim Fort a subtle yet important marker of Goa’s colonial and military history.
