Tobiyama Castle Historical Park
Utsunomiya, Japan, Japan
Tobiyama Castle Historical Park (Tobiyama‑jō Joshiseki Kōen) is a preserved medieval castle site in Takeshita‑machi, about five kilometers east of Utsunomiya city center in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan, developed on the ruins of Tobiyama Castle, a flatland‑mountain (hirayama) castle originally built in the late Kamakura period by Haga Takatoshi, a powerful retainer of the Utsunomiya clan.
The castle complex spreads over roughly 14 hectares on a river terrace on the east bank of the Kinugawa River, where natural cliffs of about 25 meters on the western and northern sides provide defense, and its layout consists of three concentric enclosures formed by clay ramparts and dry moats, with the oldest Inner and Middle baileys having relatively low walls and narrow moats, and a much larger Outer bailey with higher walls, deeper moats, and five watchtowers (yagura), all of which remain largely intact even though no internal structures survive today.
