Verified Torna Fort

Charhat Wadi, Maharashtra, India

Torna Fort, also known as Prachandagad, stands prominently in Maharashtra’s Pune district as the highest fort in the area at about 1,400 meters above sea level.

It holds a significant place in Maratha history as the first fort captured by the legendary Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj when he was just 16, marking the beginning of the Maratha Empire. Originally built in the 13th century by the Shiva Panth, the fort was renamed Torna by Shivaji and fortified with impressive walls, bastions, and gates including the famous Bini Darwaza and Konnur Darwaza.

The fort spans about three square kilometers and features notable rock formations such as Budhla Machi that resembles a whale’s back and Zunjar Machi shaped like an elephant’s trunk, offering commanding views of the surrounding Sahyadri ranges. It hosts two ancient temples dedicated to Goddess Menghai Devi and Toranjai, along with multiple water tanks and caves used for shelter and storage.

Torna’s architecture reflects the sophisticated medieval engineering of its time, combining natural geological features with man-made fortifications, making it a critical stronghold in the Maratha military strategy.
