Verified Tortworth Forest Centre and Arboretum

Tortworth, United Kingdom

Tortworth Forest Centre and Arboretum is located in Tortworth near Wotton-Under-Edge, South Gloucestershire, and is part of a larger historic arboretum once owned by the Ducie family.

The arboretum was originally a deer park and began development in the mid-19th century by the third Earl of Ducie, Henry John Moreton, who was passionate about trees and planted many unusual and rare species, including rhododendrons, conifers, oaks, and maples.

Although once extensive and surrounding the nearby Victorian mansion Tortworth Court, the arboretum is now divided among various private and public owners, including the grounds of Leyhill Prison and the Tortworth Forest Centre, which manages a 20-acre woodland area known as The Dell.

The arboretum has a rich history, has been overgrown for a time, but has seen revival efforts as a community woodland project focused on reconnecting people with nature and improving well-being through outdoor activities, conservation, and education. Despite the passage of time, many fine specimen trees remain, continuing the legacy of one of England’s notable Victorian arboretums.
