It has a rich history dating back to at least the 4th and 5th centuries CE, evidenced by the Tosham Rock Inscriptions carved into the hills, which document the lineage and religious activities of Satvata preceptors and offer valuable insights into early Vaishnavism and Gupta-era culture.

The area features ancient temples, sacred ponds, forts, carvings, and paintings, many of which reflect its spiritual and cultural significance over centuries under various dynasties such as the Gupta, Tomar, and Chauhan rulers. Tosham is also known for its medicinal sulphur springs, like the Papnash Kund, believed to have healing properties.
