Trakai Island Castle is one of Lithuania’s most famous landmarks, located on an island in Lake Galvė in the town of Trakai, about 30 km west of Vilnius. Built in the late 14th and early 15th centuries by Grand Dukes Kęstutis and Vytautas the Great, it served as an important political, military, and administrative center of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The castle is known for its striking red-brick Gothic architecture and is often described as the only island castle in Eastern Europe. After falling into ruin over the centuries, it was carefully reconstructed during the 20th century and now houses the Trakai History Museum. Today, Trakai Island Castle is a major tourist attraction, offering visitors a glimpse into Lithuania’s medieval past while providing beautiful views of the surrounding lake and landscape. It is also a popular venue for cultural events, exhibitions, and historical festivals.
