Verified Tresco Abbey Garden, Shop & Café

Tresco, United Kingdom

Tresco Abbey Garden, located on the island of Tresco in the Isles of Scilly, United Kingdom, was established in the 1830s by Augustus Smith, the 19th-century proprietor of the islands. Built within the grounds of a historic Benedictine Abbey dating back to the 10th century, the garden was created on barren land transformed by Smith using shelterbelts of Monterey pine and cypress trees to protect delicate plants from Atlantic winds.

The garden spans 17 acres and hosts over 20,000 exotic plants from around 80 countries, thriving in its mild, subtropical microclimate. The gardens are terraced on a south-facing slope, featuring plants from regions such as South Africa, Australia, the Mediterranean, and the Americas.

Tresco Abbey Garden is also home to the Valhalla Museum, which displays a unique collection of shipwreck figureheads and maritime artifacts. Visitors can enjoy the garden’s beauty, explore historic ruins, and relax at the café and shop, making it a renowned and cherished botanical destination.
