Tryambak Fort
Metghar Killa, Maharashtra, India
Tryambak Fort, also known as Metghar Killa, is a historic fort situated near the town of Tryambakeshwar in Maharashtra, India. It was originally built during the Yadava dynasty period and later came under the control of several rulers, including the Bahamani Sultanate, Nizamshah of Ahmednagar, Mughals, and eventually the Marathas.
The fort played a significant role in regional conflicts, especially during the 17th century when Peshwa Moropant Trimbak Pingle captured it for the Maratha king Shivaji. The Mughals laid lengthy sieges to reclaim it, but control alternated until the Marathas finally held it until the British took over in 1818.
The fort stands atop a steep hill and offers panoramic views of the surrounding Trimbak town and nearby forts. Though only ruins remain today, it includes water tanks, temples, and a few structural remnants. It is also recognized for its association with Hindu pilgrimage sites nearby, particularly the Trimbakeshwar Shiva Temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, which lies close to the fort. Visitors can trek to the fort via a safe, wide path that usually takes about an hour, making it accessible for visitors interested in history and trekking.
The fort's historical and religious context, combined with its scenic location in the Western Ghats, makes it an interesting destination for both cultural enthusiasts and nature lovers.
