Verified Tsuruga Castle Ruins

Tsuruga, Japan, Japan

Tsuruga Castle in Tsuruga, Japan, usually refers to the ruins of Kanegasaki Castle (also called Tsuruga Castle), a medieval mountain fortress on a low hill in what is now the city of Tsuruga in Fukui Prefecture.

Built in the 12th century by Taira no Michimori during the Genpei War, the site later saw sieges in the 14th and 16th centuries, including a famous 1570 attack by Oda Nobunaga against the Asakura clan. Today only stone and earthworks, dry moats, and the foundations of buildings and gates remain, but the government has protected the ruins as a National Historic Site since 1934, making it a quiet, historically rich spot rather than a tourist castle with a reconstructed tower.
