It was constructed during the founding of Udaipur in 1553 by Maharana Udai Singh II, who shifted the capital from Chittorgarh to this more defensible location in the Girwa Valley.

The fort featured advanced artillery defenses including a famous crocodile-faced cannon named Udaibaan. Positioned overlooking Lake Pichola and the surrounding landscape, Udaigarh formed part of a double defense system with natural hills and fortified gates protecting the city.
