Udayan Fort in Kaushambi, located between Kosam Inam and Kachhar villages in Uttar Pradesh, is an ancient archaeological site reflecting the historical significance of the region, which was once the capital of the Vatsa kingdom, a major Mahajanapada in ancient India.

The fort's ruins reveal a strong defensive structure, including thick brick walls, earth ramparts, and bastions rising up to 50 to 60 feet, along with evidence of protective moats or trenches. The site is characterized by extensive brickbats scattered across the ground, hinting at the density of buildings that once stood inside the fortress.

Excavations have uncovered remnants dating back to the Mauryan and Gupta periods, including the remains of a large palace complex used from the 8th century BCE to the 2nd century CE, featuring advanced brickwork, true arches, and galleries likely serving as royal or administrative quarters.

The fort’s strategic location on the banks of the Yamuna River supported trade and defense, while Buddhist connections are evidenced by historical accounts of Lord Buddha visiting the area and instructing King Udayan, who converted to Buddhism. Today, the ruins of Udayan Fort stand as a testament to Kaushambi’s rich historical, spiritual, and architectural heritage.
