Ueda Castle
Nagano, Japan
Ueda Castle in Nagano, Japan, was built in 1583 by the samurai leader Sanada Masayuki. Situated strategically near the Chikuma River, the castle is famous for withstanding two major attacks by the forces of Tokugawa Ieyasu during the late 16th and early 17th centuries, including the 1600 siege that delayed Tokugawa’s army en route to the Battle of Sekigahara.
After the Tokugawa victory, the castle was partially demolished but later rebuilt by the Sengoku clan and eventually controlled by a branch of the Matsudaira family. Today, only some stone walls, moats, and a turret survive, with the site functioning as a public park known for its cherry blossoms and historical significance, making it a popular cultural and tourist destination.
