Uparkot Fort
Junagadh, India
Uparkot Fort in Junagadh, Gujarat, is an ancient fortress believed to have been originally built around 319 BC during the reign of the Mauryan emperor Chandragupta Maurya.
It is strategically positioned at the foothills of Girnar Hill and has seen numerous expansions and reconstructions over centuries, especially during the Gupta period and under the Chudasama dynasty who rediscovered and revived it in the 10th century. The fort's massive granite walls, some reaching up to 70 feet high, have protected it through at least 16 sieges, including one that lasted 12 years.
Uparkot incorporates architectural elements from Hindu and Muslim influences, featuring triple ornate gateways, ancient Buddhist caves, and step-wells like Adi Kadi Vav and Navghan Kuvo, which served as vital water sources. The fort also contains a 15th-century mosque built from the remains of an older palace and elaborate tombs, reflecting its rich cultural and religious heritage.
Today, Uparkot Fort stands as a symbol of resilience and historical continuity, offering panoramic views of Junagadh and immersion into over two millennia of Indian history.
