Urasoe Castle Ruins are the remains of a large limestone gusuku (castle) in Urasoe City on Okinawa Island, Japan, which served as the capital and main royal residence of the Chūzan (Central Mountain) kingdom for over two centuries from the 13th to the early 15th century, before the Ryukyu royal court moved to Shuri Castle in Naha.

Built around the mid‑12th to late 13th century on a hill overlooking Urasoe and the East China Sea, it was the largest castle in Ryukyu during the Three Mountains period and functioned as a political and ceremonial center, with its kings later buried nearby in the Urasoe Yōdore mausoleum complex.

The castle was partially dismantled in the early 15th century, with stones reused for Shuri Castle, and it suffered further damage during the 17th‑century Satsuma invasion and especially during World War II, when Urasoe Castle and the surrounding “Maeda Highlands” became a major defensive position and fierce battlefield in the 1945 Battle of Okinawa, leaving the site heavily destroyed by bombing and ground fighting. 

Today, designated a National Historic Site in 1989, the ruins are incorporated into Urasoe Daikōen (Urasoe Grand Park), where visitors can walk among remaining stone walls, terraces, and sacred areas, tour a small on‑site museum, and enjoy broad views of the city and coastline from the hilltop, all without an entry fee for the grounds though the museum charges a small fee. Accessible by the Yui Rail to Urasoe‑Maeda Station and a short uphill walk, the site combines Ryukyu history, archaeological remains, wartime memory, and a peaceful park setting for quiet exploration and reflection.
