Usuki Castle Ruins
Usuki, Japan, Japan
Usuki Castle Ruins in Usuki, Oita Prefecture, are the remains of a 16th-century hilltop castle built by the Christian warlord Otomo Sorin on what was then a small island in Usuki Bay.
Over time, the surrounding bay was reclaimed and the site, once a strategic stronghold and center of trade, became part of the town, but the stone ramparts, moats, and a few turrets and gates still hint at its former power. Most of the wooden castle structures were dismantled in the Meiji era, and the area is now a quiet public park with walking paths, a small shrine, and viewpoints overlooking the city, especially popular during spring when cherry blossoms bloom around the ruins.
Visitors today experience it less as a fortress and more as a peaceful green space that preserves the atmosphere of an old castle town, complemented by nearby samurai residences and narrow, historic streets that recall Usuki’s feudal past.
