Uto Old Castle Ruins are the remains of a medieval flatland castle in Uto City, Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan, originally built in 1048 on a small hill called Nishiokadai by the Uto clan, a branch of the powerful Kikuchi clan, and later used as a regional stronghold during the Sengoku period until it was largely abandoned after the Uto clan was wiped out in 1503.

The site actually consists of two separate castle complexes on the same hill: the older medieval Uto Castle (Uto kō‑jo) and, about 600 meters east, the relocated early‑modern Uto Castle built in 1588 by the warlord Konishi Yukinaga, which was later dismantled and some of its main tower was moved to become the famous Uto Yagura turret inside Kumamoto Castle.

Today, the ruins are protected as a National Historic Site (since 2020) and are incorporated into a historic park where visitors can walk along preserved and partially reconstructed moats, gate foundations, and building platforms, with informational displays that explain the castle’s role in local politics and its connection to the larger history of the Kikuchi, Uto, and later Edo‑period domains.
