Utsunomiya Castle Ruins Park
Utsunomiya, Japan, Japan
Utsunomiya Castle Ruins Park is a public park in Utsunomiya City, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan, built on the site of the former main bailey (honmaru) of Utsunomiya Castle, which was once celebrated as one of the seven great castles of the Kanto region.
The original castle was a medieval stronghold of the Utsunomiya clan from the Kamakura to the late Sengoku period, but it was largely destroyed and abandoned after Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s campaigns in the late 16th century, leaving mainly earthworks and stone foundations that survived into modern times.
The park recreates part of the castle’s Honmaru with restored moats, earthen ramparts, and two reconstructed two‑story yagura turrets, the Seimei‑dai and Fujimi‑yagura, which now serve as observation points and landmarks that evoke the castle’s former scale and defensive design. Inside the park stands Seimeikan, a small museum that displays models of the castle, historical documents, and artifacts to help visitors understand the complex’s evolution from a Kamakura‑period clan base to an Edo‑era regional power center.
The site is a popular local spot for cherry blossoms in spring, with rows of higan, Somei Yoshino, and other cherry trees that are illuminated for night viewing, and it also hosts annual events such as the Utsunomiya Castle Cherry Blossom Festival and the Utsunomiya Castle Ruins Festival in October, which features a historical procession and food stalls.
