Vanadurga Fort
Channur Khalsa, Karnataka, India
Vanadurga Fort, also known as Wanadurga Fort, is located in the village of Vanadurga near Channur Khalsa in Shahapur taluk of Yadgir district, Karnataka.
Built in the early 1800s by Krishnappa Nayaka of the Shorapur Nayaka dynasty, the fort originally served as a small military outpost and defensive station within their territory. Its name derives from the Kannada words “vana” meaning forest and “durga” meaning fort, as it was once surrounded by dense woodland that has since given way to farmlands.
The structure features two main enclosures—an outer rectangular court protecting the entrance and an inner citadel that contains remnants of guard rooms, a small Hanuman temple, a well, and other ancient structures. The fort was reputedly gifted by King Piddanayaka to his queen Venkammamba and was once encircled by a deep moat for defense.
Though much of it now lies in ruins, Vanadurga Fort remains a striking monument of medieval military architecture, reflecting the defensive ingenuity and cultural legacy of the Nayaka rulers in northern Karnataka.
