Vandan Fort
Maharashtra, India
Vandan Fort is a historic hill fort in Satara District, Maharashtra, India, situated on a 3,800-foot spur of the Sahyadri range alongside its twin Chandan Fort, both built around 1191-1192 by King Bhoj-II of the Shilahar Dynasty.
Captured by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj from the Adilshah of Bijapur in 1673, it later shifted between Marathas and Mughals before returning to Maratha control under Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj in 1707, serving as a strategic military outpost overlooking fertile sugarcane valleys.
In good condition today with intact main gates, bastions, a stone Dargah, water cisterns, sentry rooms, and Arabic inscriptions, it draws trekkers for its easy 2-3 hour hike from base villages like Rautwadi, offering panoramic views and a day trip combining both forts.
