Vardhangad Fort
Maharashtra, India
Vardhangad Fort, located in the Satara district of Maharashtra, was constructed by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj between 1673 and 1674 to guard the eastern frontier of his territory.
The fort stands on the Bhadle-Kundla spur of the Mahadev range, marking the boundary between Koregaon and Khatav talukas. It played a defensive role during several conflicts, including attacks by Mahadji Shinde's forces in 1800 and Fattesingh Mane in 1805.
Architecturally, the fort features an entrance built in the Gomukhi style facing east, with remnants of temples dedicated to Lord Hanuman, Lord Shiva, and Goddess Vardhanimata, whose temple is a frequent site of worship among locals. The fort has several water tanks and a secret chamber embedded in its walls. Its elevation offers breathtaking views of the Sahyadri ranges and the surrounding villages.
The trek to the fort is relatively easy and can be completed in about an hour from the base village Vardhangaon. The fort remains an important historic and cultural landmark, reflecting Maratha military architecture and regional religious traditions.
