Varugad
Maharashtra, India
Varugad Fort is a hill fort situated in Maharashtra's Satara district, located about 3,000 feet above sea level in the Sahyadri mountain range.
It was built by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1674 as a strategic outpost to oversee and protect the road between the villages of Kinesvar and Par. The fort is noted for its strong construction featuring robust stone walls and bastions built in the distinctive Gaumukhi architectural style, with a narrow citadel approached from the summit.
It has well-preserved gates, including a citadel door in the Gaumukhi style, and ancient rock-cut water tanks that retain water year-round. The fort also houses temples, including one dedicated to Bhairavnath, and a Shivling under a large tree. Its steep stone staircases, some inclined as sharply as 80 degrees, offer a challenging trek with scenic views.
Traditionally, it was manned by hereditarily loyal troops and served as a defense against Mughal attacks from the plain below. Varugad passed into Peshwa control in the early 19th century before eventually being surrendered to British authority in 1818. The fort’s ruins remain an evocative symbol of Maratha military architecture and history.
