Vasai Fort
Vasai-Virar, Maharashtra, India
Vasai Fort, also known as Bassein Fort, is a historically significant fort located in Vasai-Virar, Maharashtra, about 50 kilometers north of Mumbai. Originally constructed by Bahadur Shah, Sultan of Gujarat, in the early 16th century, it was captured by the Portuguese in 1534 who transformed it into a flourishing colonial city with opulent churches, convents, and administrative buildings.
Vasai served as a major naval base and shipbuilding center for the Portuguese and was well fortified with strong walls and bastions surrounded by sea on three sides. The Marathas, led by Chimaji Appa, captured the fort in 1739 following a prolonged siege, marking the decline of Portuguese power in the region. The fort later came under British control in the 19th century.
Architecturally, Vasai Fort is a blend of Portuguese and Indian styles, with remains of churches featuring barrel-vaulted ceilings, watchtowers, gates, and water tanks still visible despite deterioration. Its strategic coastal location made it a key fortification in Western India, and today it stands as a popular tourist site notable for its historical legacy and scenic views.
Access is easiest via Vasai Railway Station, with nearby local transport options.
