Vasota Fort
Maharashtra, India
Vasota Fort, also known as Vyaghragad or Tiger Fort, is a historic hill fort located in the Satara district of Maharashtra near the village of Bamnoli. It was built in the 12th century by King Bhojraj II of the Shilahara dynasty and later captured by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1655, who renamed it Vyaghragad due to its strong natural defenses and tiger-like strength.
The fort is perched about 1,200 meters high amidst dense forests in the Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary, surrounded by the Shivsagar reservoir on three sides, making it naturally secure. It includes three main sections—Old Fort, New Fort, and Nageshwar—with notable structures like temples dedicated to Mahadev, Nageshwar, and Hanuman, along with ruins of the granary and a castle associated with Tai Telini.
Known for its traditional Maratha architectural style, Vasota Fort provides panoramic views of nearby forts and the Koyna River. It saw heavy damage during British bombardment in 1818 but remains a popular trekking destination due to its scenic natural surroundings and historic significance. The trek to the fort is moderately challenging and offers an immersive experience in both nature and history.
