Vattakottai Fort
Vattakkottai, Tamil Nadu, India
Vattakottai Fort, located near Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu, was built in the 18th century during the reign of Travancore King Marthanda Varma as a coastal defense fortification.
The fort is made primarily of granite blocks and laterite and was designed to guard the southern coastline from naval invasions. Its unique architecture features a rectangular shape with rounded corners, giving it a circular appearance, hence the name Vattakottai. The fort covers about 3.5 acres with imposing walls up to 25 feet high and parapets thick enough to withstand attacks. Inside, there are watchtowers, restrooms, and a pond at the heart of the fort, creating a serene ambiance.
Historically, the fort was connected by a secret tunnel to the Padmanabhapuram Palace, though the tunnel is now sealed. Perched on a rocky outcrop by the sea, the fort offers stunning panoramic views of the Arabian Sea and surrounding hills, making it a scenic and historically significant tourist destination.
It also reflects the architectural blending of indigenous Dravidian styles with European military design concepts introduced by Captain Eustachius De Lannoy, an ex-Dutch naval officer who served the Travancore kingdom.
