Vecchiano
Italy, Italy
Vecchiano is a charming town and municipality (comune) in the Province of Pisa in Tuscany, Italy, located about 8 kilometers north of Pisa on the right bank of the Serchio River.
Its name means "old place" in Italian, likely deriving from the Roman senator Vetuleius whose family owned these lands, with the name first recorded in 762 as Vecliano. The town has around 11,400–11,900 inhabitants and covers 67 square kilometers of gently rolling hills, streams, and coastal landscapes.
Vecchiano is particularly notable for its natural beauty, as much of its territory lies within the Migliarino, San Rossore, and Massaciuccoli Regional Park, offering hiking trails and opportunities to observe local flora and fauna. The municipality includes Marina di Vecchiano, a peaceful seaside resort with four kilometers of unspoiled golden sand beaches backed by thick vegetation, clear shallow water, and far from crowds.
The historic center remains surrounded by protective walls, with ruins of an Etruscan fortress visible and the Gaetani Castle (also called Lanfranchi Castle or Santa Maria in Castello hermitage) overlooking the town from the hills. The economy is primarily agricultural, especially known for high-quality artichokes, olive oil, and wine cultivation, continuing an ancient tradition from Etruscan and Roman times.
