Velankanni
Tamil Nadu, India
Velankanni is a small coastal town in Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu, set along the Bay of Bengal on the Coromandel Coast and known as one of India’s most important Christian pilgrimage centres.
It is famous for the Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health, a large white Gothic-style Catholic church often called the “Lourdes of the East,” which draws millions of pilgrims of all faiths each year, especially during the annual festival in late August and early September.
Once an active port trading with places as far as Rome and Greece, Velankanni today combines a strong spiritual atmosphere with a relaxed beach-town feel, offering a long sandy beach, simple markets, and a pleasant climate that make it popular for both worship and seaside visits.
