Viareggio
Tuscany, Italy
Viareggio is a lively seaside city in northern Tuscany, Italy, located on the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea. With a population of over 63,000, it is the main center of the Versilia region and the second-largest city in the Province of Lucca. The town’s name comes from the Latin “via regis,” meaning the “king’s road,” which once connected it with Lucca.
The area where Viareggio now stands was once marshland and partly covered by sea. Its early history saw struggles against both natural challenges like malaria and rival neighboring cities. The city began developing in the Middle Ages, especially after the construction of the Torre Matilde tower in 1172, built to defend the coast. Over time, drainage projects and port improvements helped the town grow, especially as a port for Lucca. In the 19th century, Viareggio began to stand out as a resort town, attracting nobility and artists, including famous visitors like Lord Byron and Percy B. Shelley.
Viareggio’s modern development accelerated in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The opening of its first bathing resorts and the creation of the long seaside promenade, called the Passeggiata, helped turn the town into a fashionable destination. The promenade is still one of its main attractions, lined with shops, cafes, restaurants, and elegant Art Nouveau (Liberty-style) buildings, reflecting the city’s Belle Époque history. The beaches are another highlight, with long stretches of soft sand and well-equipped beach clubs.
A major feature of Viareggio is its famous Carnival, first held in 1873. This celebration is one of the oldest and largest in Europe and is known for its spectacular parades with giant papier-mâché floats, street parties, music, and fireworks, drawing crowds from all over Italy and beyond. The Carnival’s mascot is Burlamacco, a distinctive red, white, and black masked figure.
Although many of its historic buildings were destroyed during World War II, Viareggio has preserved landmarks like the 16th-century Torre Matilde, as well as its tradition of shipbuilding.
