The city's name means "City of Victory," and it has a rich legacy shaped by multiple dynasties including the Yadavas, Bahmani Sultanate, and Adil Shahi dynasty who made it their capital in the late 15th century. Vijayapura flourished as a prominent center of Islamic architecture, known for its impressive monuments like the Gol Gumbaz and Ibrahim Rauza.

Throughout its history, the city saw shifts in control, including Mughal conquest under Emperor Aurangzeb and rule by the Nizam of Hyderabad before eventually coming under Maratha and British influences.
