Verified Visapur Fort

Maharashtra, India

Visapur Fort, situated near Lonavala in Maharashtra, is a historically significant hill fort built between 1713 and 1720 by Balaji Vishwanath, the first Peshwa of the Maratha Empire, and later enhanced by his grandson Bajirao I.

It stands at an elevation of approximately 3,556 feet, adjacent to its twin fort Lohagad, and was strategically positioned to protect trade routes between Pune and Mumbai. The fort is characterized by its impressive granite stone architecture featuring thick walls, bastions, watchtowers, and water reservoirs that allowed ample water storage even on the hilltop.

Key ruins include a large palace area, government office buildings, several Hanuman temples including a massive carved figure, and a well reputedly built by the Pandavas. The fort played a prominent role in Maratha defense during battles with the British, who captured it in 1818 during the Third Anglo-Maratha War.

It offers panoramic views of the surrounding Western Ghats and valleys and has become a popular trekking destination, especially during the monsoon when its numerous waterfalls and lush greenery attract visitors. The fort’s combination of military, historical, and natural significance makes it an enduring symbol of the Maratha Empire’s architectural and strategic prowess.
