Verified Vishalgad Fort

Maharashtra, India

Vishalgad Fort, also known locally as Khelna or Khilna, is an ancient hill fort located about 36 kilometers from Kolhapur in Maharashtra.

Built in 1058 by the Shilahara ruler Marsinh and initially called Khilgil, the fort changed hands many times, falling under the Seuna Yadavas, Khilji dynasty, Vijayanagar Empire, and Adilshahi dynasty before Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj captured it in 1659 and renamed it Vishalgad, meaning grand fort.

The fort played a crucial role in Maratha history as a center of power, defense, and rebellion, notably when Shivaji escaped from the Adilshahi siege at Panhala in 1660 using this fort as a refuge. Vishalgad was the capital of a large region with over ninety towns and villages under its control at the height of Maratha rule.

Architecturally, it is perched on the Sahyadri mountain range about 3,500 feet above sea level and is known for its strong stone walls, water reservoirs, temples including the Amruteshwar Temple, and tombs of Maratha warriors. The fort also witnessed conflict with the British, who demolished parts of it following mutiny in 1844.

Today, Vishalgad remains a significant historical and trekking site, offering panoramic views and insights into Maratha military architecture and regional heritage.
