Vizianagaram Fort
Andhra Pradesh, India
Vizianagaram Fort in Andhra Pradesh was built in 1713 by Maharaja Vijaya Rama Raju, founder of the princely state of Vizianagaram. The fort is square-shaped with walls about 10 meters high and features two main gates including the ornate east gate called the Nagar Khana, which has a drum tower used to announce royal orders and guests.
Inside the fort are several temples, including those dedicated to Hanuman and Lakshmi, the latter regarded as the fort's guardian deity. The fort also holds historic palaces such as the Moti Mahal and a victory tower called the Ghanta Stambham.
Over the years, parts of the fort have been used as administrative buildings and educational institutions while the surrounding moat has been replaced by landscaped gardens. The fort remains a significant landmark reflecting the local history and architecture of the Vizianagaram region.
