Wagingera
Karnataka, India
Wagingera is a village in the Shorapur taluka of Yadgir district, Karnataka, known primarily for its historical fort located about 5 kilometers west of Shorapur city.
The fort played a decisive role during the Siege of Wagingera in 1705 when Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb's army captured it after a three-month siege, marking a significant event in the region's history. Originally a capital of the Surapura Nayakas, the fort witnessed fierce resistance against Mughal attacks, including by commander Pedda Pidia Nayak, who managed to recapture the fort after initial Mughal occupation.
Following the siege, the fort was renamed Fort Rahman Bakhsh by the Mughals. Wagingera was once a power center before the administrative capital shifted to Surapur. The village today is situated between hills and still has the remnants of its fortifications, standing as a symbol of the area's turbulent history and strategic importance during the Mughal and regional Nayaka rule.
