Verified Warangal Fort

Warangal, Telangana, India

Warangal Fort in Telangana, India, is an ancient fortress built mainly during the 13th century under the Kakatiya dynasty, particularly King Ganapati Deva and later enhanced by his daughter Rudrama Devi and grandson Prataparudra II.

The fort covers a large area with three concentric circular walls surrounded by a wide moat, with the innermost stone wall featuring 45 massive bastions. Its architecture showcases expert craftsmanship with large granite stones fitted without mortar and intricately carved ornamental gateways called Kakatiya Kala Thoranam, which stand about 30 feet tall adorned with floral motifs, mythical creatures, and geometric patterns.

These gates originally belonged to the grand Swayambhudeva Shiva temple and are emblematic of Kakatiya culture, now serving as the emblem of Telangana. The fort played a key role in medieval South Indian politics and warfare, with a complex defensive design including ramparts, multiple walls, bastions, and watchtowers, as well as temples, water tanks, and granaries within. It remains an iconic symbol of Telangana's heritage and architectural brilliance.
