Yamagata Castle Ruins
Yamagata, Japan, Japan
Yamagata Castle Ruins are the remains of one of the largest flatland castles in northern Japan, located in the heart of Yamagata City, Yamagata Prefecture, and now preserved as Kajo Park, a National Historic Site and one of the 100 Famous Castles of Japan. Originally built in 1357 by Shiba Kaneyori, the first lord of the Mogami clan and Ushū Tandai (regional commissioner), the castle was greatly expanded in the early 17th century by Mogami Yoshiaki, whose 11th‑generation rule made it the political and military center of the domain, with massive triple moats, zigzag stone walls, and extensive baileys that were said to be wider than those of Himeji Castle. After the fall of the Mogami clan, the castle was maintained by the Torii and later the Date families, and continued to be used until 1872, but most of its buildings were dismantled in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, leaving only the earthworks, moats, and some foundations, while the site was renamed Kajo (“Mist Castle”) Park in 1906 when over 1,000 cherry trees were planted to commemorate the Russo‑Japanese War. Today, visitors can walk through the park’s triple moat system, see the restored East Otemon Gate and other reconstructed gates, observe visible foundations and stone ramparts, and enjoy one of Yamagata’s most famous cherry‑blossom spots in mid‑April, with the site accessible on a 15‑minute walk or short bus ride from Yamagata Station to the Kajo‑Koen‑Mae stop.
