Yumenoshima Tropical Greenhouse Dome
Koto, Tokyo, Japan, Japan
Yumenoshima Tropical Greenhouse Dome (also called Yumenoshima Nettai Shokubutsukan) is a unique botanical garden and tropical greenhouse located at 2-1-2 Yumenoshima in Kōtō City, Tokyo, Japan, built on reclaimed land that was once Tokyo's primary landfill site in the 1950s-60s and opened in 1988 as an innovative example of sustainable urban development.
The facility consists of three interconnected geodesic domes soaring up to 28-30 meters high (92-98 feet) and spanning approximately 1,500-2,000 square meters, resembling sails of a sailboat from the outside, and houses around 1,000 species of tropical and subtropical plants in a jungle-like environment modeled after a tropical rainforest.
Its environmentally-friendly air conditioning system uses excess heat energy from the adjacent Shin-Koto Incineration Plant, with high-temperature water covering all heating, cooling, and hot water supply needs, maintaining a constant computer-controlled temperature of 15°C even during winter.
