Latvia is a country in the Baltic region of Northern Europe, with a coastline along the Baltic Sea and sharing borders with Estonia, Russia, Belarus, and Lithuania. The capital city is Riga. Latvia covers about 64,589 km² and has a population of roughly 1.8 million. Most Latvians belong to the Baltic ethnolinguistic group and speak Latvian, with a substantial Russian-speaking minority.
Latvia became independent after World War I, was occupied by the Soviet Union during World War II, and regained its independence in 1991 following the collapse of the USSR. It is a parliamentary republic and a member of the European Union, Eurozone, and NATO.
Latvia features a temperate climate and is known for its forests, lakes, and rivers, as well as its rapid economic transition to a modern market economy over the past three decades.
