Vecpiebalga Castle, also known as Piebalga Castle, is a historic medieval bishop’s castle located in Vecpiebalga Parish, Cēsis Municipality, in Latvia’s Vidzeme region. Today, the site survives as picturesque ruins that reflect its long and turbulent past. The castle was originally built between the late 13th and early 14th centuries and served as an important stronghold of the Archbishopric of Riga. Its location on a key route through medieval Livonia made it strategically significant for trade, administration, and regional defense. Over the centuries, the castle was damaged and rebuilt several times due to conflicts involving the Teutonic Order, regional wars, and later the Livonian War. By the 17th century it had largely lost its military importance, and by the 18th century it had fallen into ruin. Visitors can still see remnants of the stone fortifications and walls, which provide a glimpse into medieval architecture and the history of the region. The ruins are a local cultural landmark and form part of the rich historical heritage of Vecpiebalga, an area known for its contributions to Latvian culture and literature.
