Vecdole Castle Ruin
Latvia, Latvia
Vecdole Castle Ruin is the remains of one of Latvia’s earliest stone castles, located on Dole Island along the Daugava River near Salaspils.
Built before 1226, it belonged to the Dole family, who were vassals of the Archbishop of Riga, and served as a fortified residence during the early medieval period. The castle was constructed from dolomite stone with brick details and originally included defensive walls, a residential building, and a tower overlooking the river.
In 1298, it was destroyed by the Livonian Order during regional conflicts and was never rebuilt. Today, only small sections of the ruins remain, making the site a quiet but historically significant landmark. Visitors can explore the area and enjoy views of the Daugava River while discovering a rare surviving trace of Latvia’s early medieval history.
