Riga Castle

Riga, Latvia, Latvia

---

Riga Castle is one of Latvia’s most important historical landmarks, located on the banks of the Daugava River in the heart of Riga.

Originally founded in 1330 by the Livonian Order, it has been rebuilt and expanded several times over the centuries, reflecting the region’s changing rulers and architectural styles. The castle has served as a center of political power for many different governments, including the Livonian Order, Poland-Lithuania, Sweden, the Russian Empire, and modern Latvia.

Since 1922, it has been the official residence of the President of Latvia, except during periods of foreign occupation. Today, Riga Castle is both a symbol of Latvian statehood and a major cultural site. Along with housing the presidential residence, it is home to the Latvian National Museum of History, where visitors can explore exhibitions covering Latvia’s history, medieval castles, and cultural heritage.
